How to Start a Fashion Brand: The Complete Beginner’s Guide
It is impossible to capture all the steps and nuances of starting a fashion brand in one blog post. However, being one of the top Google searches when it comes to the fashion industry, I thought I’d try to list the basic steps to start a fashion brand to help you understand what to expect.
In a nutshell, to launch a fashion brand, you will need to identify your niche and target customer, develop a business plan, determine your unique selling proposition (USP), and create a strong brand identity and brand story.
From there, you’ll choose a name, handle legal requirements like registering your business and purchasing your domain, and decide how often you’ll release collections. Following that is the design phase. It includes sourcing fabrics and trims, creating tech packs, and finding a reliable manufacturer.
Finally, you’ll move into marketing and sales, building relationships with your target audience, and focusing on customer retention.
To dive a little deeper, here are the major steps for starting your fashion brand, broken down into clear phases. (I also speak about this topic in one of my YouTube videos, which is a great supplement to the information below.)
1. Foundational Steps
Define Your Niche and Target Audience
Research fashion trends and identify a specific market segment that is both profitable and aligned with your creative vision. Think about your customer’s lifestyle, pain points, and desires. This clarity will help you create a brand that stands out in a saturated industry.
Develop a Business Plan
A fashion business plan doesn’t need to be lengthy, but it should outline your vision, mission, pricing strategy, budget, and marketing plan. Having this blueprint helps guide your decisions and attracts potential investors or partners. I provide a detailed fashion brand business plan template you can purchase to speed up this process.
Build Your Brand Identity
Your brand identity is more than just a logo. It’s the visuals, tone of voice, and emotional connection you create with your audience. At CMT Studio, we create comprehensive brand style guides that ensure consistency across all touchpoints.
Become Professional
Register your business, get an EIN number, secure your domain, purchase business insurance, and set up a professional email. These small steps build trust and credibility.
2. Design and Production
Design Your Collection
Bring your creative ideas to life by designing a line that reflects your brand story and aesthetic. Consider timelines, drops, seasonality, trends, and how each piece will fit into your customer’s wardrobe and address their needs.
Source Materials
Work with reliable suppliers to find quality fabrics and trims. The materials you choose will directly impact your brand positioning, perceived value, and profit margins.
Create Tech Packs
A tech pack is the blueprint for your garment. It communicates all technical details to the manufacturer. Without this, mistakes and miscommunications can be costly.
Find a Manufacturer
Research and vet manufacturers that align with your production goals. Reliability, quality, and ethical practices matter. On my YouTube channel, I share tips on where to source manufacturers beyond the usual Alibaba approach.
Prototyping and Sampling
Develop samples to test fit, quality, and construction before mass production. Always approve fabric swatches, strike-offs, and trims in advance.
Order Production
Confirm the cost of goods, quantities (don’t order too much), place purchase orders, and arrange logistics. Decide whether you’ll store inventory in-house, use a 3PL (third-party logistics company), or dropship.
3. Sales and Marketing
Price Your Collection
Set retail prices that balance profitability and consumer demand. Too high, and you’ll alienate customers; too low, and you risk undervaluing your brand.
Build an Online Store
Create a polished Shopify e-commerce website to serve as your digital storefront. It should reflect your brand’s identity. With built-in apps and integrations, it’s the best platform for fashion startups.
Choose Sales Channels
Will you sell only online, through pop-up shops, at local markets, or wholesale to retailers? Mapping this out early ensures you align your marketing and production strategy.
Develop a Marketing Strategy
Go beyond just Instagram posts. A real fashion brand marketing strategy should include professional photos, email marketing, influencer collaborations, press outreach, signature brand differentiators, and possibly paid ads to name a few.
4. Launch and Growth
Launch Your Brand
Your launch is more than just going live. It’s your opportunity to build buzz and attract your first loyal customers. Use social media teasers, influencer seeding, email generation forms, or launch events to build a following even before you go public.
Track Sales and Inventory
Monitor your sales data, returns, and customer behavior to make informed decisions for your next collection.
Plan for the Future
Use customer feedback and market insights to refine your next drop or collection. The fashion industry thrives on adaptation.
